Another way to type symbols in Word is by clicking insert (found in the menu bar) then Symbol.

Math Tip:
In Microsoft Word, type other exponents by holding down the Ctrl, Shift,
and + keys, release, then type the number key (not using numeric keypad). Remove the feature by again pressing Ctrl, Shift, and +

Another method is to click Format, then Font in the Menu Bar.
Choose "Superscript" when typing or after highlighting the number.

~ Do you know what this symbol is?
It's called a tildé (til-duh).  The tildé is an atomic unit in written language.  The name of the character is Spanish, from the Latin titulus meaning a title or superscription.  It was originally written over a letter as a mark of abbreviation but has since acquired a number of other uses as an accent mark or a character in its own right.  It's on your keyboard just to the left of the number 1 key.  Sometimes we have to type it in a Web site address.
