GREAT IDEA GRANTS
 |
McKeesport
Area High School science teacher, Mrs. Marla Hayes, has been awarded a Great
Idea Grant by the Mon Valley Education Consortium during their spring round
of awards. Mrs. Hayes' grant entitled, "Flight to Beauty," was funded
by the MAHS Alumni Association and William C. Schultz, MAHS Class of 1944.
This project will culminate in the creation of a butterfly garden on the
school grounds. Students will learn about plant and butterfly species
that are native to Pennsylvania. They will design and plant an area of
the courtyard for native plant species (starting a few of the plants from
seeds). Building construction instructor Mr. Mike Locke and his
students will build
butterfly nesting boxes. Students will also learn how to classify
butterflies and learn about their lives.
The Mon Valley Education Consortium rewards innovative and exciting
educational ideas through its Great Idea Grants Program. This program
provides funds to teachers to allow imporved teachint strategies to become
realities. This program is designed as a vehicle for teachers to
translate their teaching ideas into actual learning experiences for their
students. |
