McKeesport Area School District provides a comprehensive drug and alcohol prevention and intervention program.  This Student Assistance Program (SAP) was designed by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Departments of Health and Public Welfare.

The program provides assistance for each school district to establish and maintain appropriate counseling and support services for students.  These services will address problems related to drugs, alcohol and dangerous controlled substances.

SMART CHOICES PROGRAM

We are pleased to introduce the Smart Choices Program at the high school.  It is our hope that each student will be able to participate in a focus group targeting areas such as self-esteem, peer pressure, positive peer relations, anger management and drug and alcohol education.

These issues will be discussed in an eight week open forum sessions.  Present at each meeting will be a member of our staff, along with a Student Assistance Liaison from Auberle to co-facilitate the groups.  Your child will have the opportunity to express and share any concerns or difficulties he/she may be experiencing.  He/she will learn skills to become better decision makers during the difficult adolescence years.

As always, it is our desire to have parental and community involvement to better service each child and their individual needs.  Therefore, if the discussion groups indicate that further assistance seems necessary, we will ask for your permission to refer your child for pre-assessment.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call the guidance office at (412) 664-3658 and ask to speak to a Student Assistance CORE TEAM member.

CHILDREN THROUGHOUT
THE DISTRICT
BENEFIT FROM THE
SAP PROGRAM!

The Student Assistance Program is a unique undertaking because it represents a core team of professionally trained student assistance members including:

Counselors

Teachers

Nurses

Administration

Community Agency Liaisons

This team does not diagnose, treat or refer for treatment; however, they may refer assessments for a specific treatment.

DRUG & ALCOHOL COMPONENT

Through cooperative efforts, the
Student Assistance Program is able to coordinate a variety of drug and alcohol prevention and intervention approaches.  Each approach is designed to teach school-age children about the dangers and harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.  Instruction is age appropriate and integrated into applicable courses of study.

The district's projects and programs represent the most progressive and comprehensive "school setting" approach for drug and alcohol prevention and intervention.

The systematic process utilizes effective, accountable and professional techniques.  These methods help to remove learning barriers and (when necessary) provide parents and students with the appropriate resources to access community services.

MENTAL HEALTH COMPONENT

The
Student Assistance Program has been developed to include a mental health component.  This important element aides school personnel in the identification, assessment, referral and support of students.  Many of these students may experience a variety of behavioral, personal, academic or other difficulties that influence their daily functions.

The
Student Assistance Program is a prevention and intervention program - not treatment.  Students who require additional intervention are referred to an outpatient treatment program.

Services include:
Consultation & education with school core teams
  Pre-assessment of referred students
  Mental Health Liaisons
  Emergency consultation & intervention
Co-facilitation of psycho-educational support and after care groups
In-service training for students or faculty
  Outside referrals

PARENTAL RIGHTS

Parents have the right to be involved in the process and have full access to all school records pertaining to their child, under applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

Parental involvement, in all phases of the Student Assistance Program, is a vital part in all phases of the decision making processes.  This involvement is the key to a successful resolution and underscores the importance of the parent's responsibility.

It is important to note that all core team referrals and information is kept confidential from outside sources.
