Scholarship Opportunities
for the
MAHS Graduating
0f Class of 2008
Seniors
seeking scholarship information, including the scholarships, grants, and
awards available from the McKeesport High School Alumni and Friends
Association, are offered a special service from the Guidance Office.
Mr. Stash, Volunteer Coordinator of the Scholarship Program, provides
individual sessions with each student applicant, selecting and discussing
the scholarships in regard to career goals, college of choice, and special
family and personal situations. In prior years, scholarship
information was deposited in a scholarship drawer or depository through
which the students could root and research, often applying for
scholarships for which they were not eligible or missing ones for which
they were qualified. "This one-on-one meeting allows me to
tailor the scholarship applications to each student's specific need,"
Mr. Stash noted, "And in five or ten minutes, the student is off with
a wealth of source material. We have a remarkable amount of
information which I have solicited and cajoled from various sites,
including career profiles and occupation guides." He
added that at peak guidance times as scheduling, grade reporting, and college
application rushes, students may be asked to return later in the day or
the following day to avail themselves of this information.
America's
milk processors and USA Today have announced their ninth annual "Scholar
Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" Award Program. The
program recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12.
Twenty-five athletes will win a $7,500 college scholarship, a weekend at
Disney World in Florida, and an opportunity to be pictured in a special
Milk Mustache ad in June 2006.
Teachers, coaches, principals, guidance counselors, athletic directors,
parents, and relatives can nominate a student athlete until March 3,
2006.

students in 9th through 12th grades. The challenge begins with an
online quiz from January 9-17, 2006
(click on the AAA logo).
The top five scorers in each of the 50 states and the District of
Columbia will then take a 40 question written exam. The top scorer
will be named the state champion and advance to the national contest to
be held May 13-16 at Universal Orlando in Orlando, Florida. The
contest will award more than $100,000 in college scholarships and
prizes. Each state champion will receive an expense-paid trip to
Universal Orlando, with chaperone, to participate in the national

A
special guidance service this year
is the individual scholarship conference with Mr. Stash.
Each student seeking scholarship and financial aid
information will be provided with an individual scholarship
packet based upon college selected
and course of studies projected.
Most scholarships have gone the Internet route and
are readily accessible via these important sites:
Additionally, a number of search agencies have been installed on the
computers in the Guidance Office. These computers are available
throughout the day.
One further area to explore is the employer of your
parents/guardians. Many businesses offer scholarships to the
children of their employees.
