Over the past seven years, the staff at George Washington Elementary has
incorporated research based programs and initiated a variety of
strategies to instruct students in Reading and Math. Prior to
1999, only 19% of the students at George Washington Elementary were
Proficient or Advanced in reading and math. In the Fall of 1999,
the Success for All (SFA) reading program was implemented and the
on-going professional development by SFA personnel has been the key to
strengthening reading instruction.
In Reading, students are taught at their
instructional level for 90 minutes daily. Assessments are
administered every eight weeks and the testing results are crucial for
students to be challenged via flexible reading groups. The 4Sight
test, which parallels the PSSA, is an instrumental tool which allow
teachers to target the students' strengths and weaknesses.
A recent initiative, the Math Science
Project, provides teachers with additional avenues to generate and
inspire students to explore mathematical concepts. Being exposed
to "thinker questions" daily and working in cooperative groups has
allowed the students to make noteworthy advances in their understanding
of math concepts.
Additionally, the full day Kindergarten
program has been a positive feature and successful in preparing the
students for first grade. Many students are beginning first grade
"reading" above grade level as a result of the full day Kindergarten
program. The upcoming Head Start preschool program, which will be
housed at George Washington Elementary, will insure continued academic
success for the participating students.
Over the years, George Washington students
have made significant academic progress, which is being reflected in the
state assessments. The George Washington Staff is extremely proud
to share the 2006 PSSA scores with you.
The numbers below indicate the number of
students out of 102 in 2005 and 103 students in 2006 who scored
Advanced/Proficient. 81.8% of our 3rd grade scored proficient or
advanced in Math and 51.1% scored proficient or advanced in reading.
